Offering Medical Marijuana (Detailed)
In order for a doctor to start providing an alternative to pharmaceuticals they must first get a license to recommend cannabis, in order to do that they must follow the steps required by the state. First they are to take the state’s medical cannabis course. After purchasing the course, the doctor will then get an online PDF featuring its content. They must review the PDF and take a test on it. If the doctor gets at least 80% of the test answers correct, they will receive two AMA & PRA (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and Physician’s Recognition Award) Category 1 Credits.Having credits from that class makes the doctor eligible for Florida’s medical marijuana registry.
When signing up for the registry the doctor has to enter their information and the system will check the CE broker and make sure that they have completed the course and have the credits.
The Florida Medical Association's class will teach the doctor everything they need to know to determine if a patient qualifies for medical marijuana. As well as information on the different forms of medical marijuana so that they understand what would be a better treatment plan for certain patients. The class would also be giving them information on the Florida medical marijuana laws, the qualifying conditions, how to legally delivery mechanisms for medical cannabis as well as the Florida cannabis laws for doctors
Originally doctors looking for certification had to take an eight-hour course instead of a two-hour one being that the 8 hr class no longer meets the education requirements set by Florida. Doctors can complete the entire course online without having to attend an in-person lecture. After completing the course once receiving the credits from the medical marijuana course, the doctor is to sign up to the registry and offer certifications to their patients.
By following the steps outlined by the Department of Health to get a username and password for your registry account. Access to the medical marijuana registry lets you:
Add a patient to the registry
Search for a patient already in the database
Create a Physician Certification that authorizes a patient to buy medical marijuana
Create orders that serve as digital recommendations
Once the doctor has authorization from the state to recommend medical marijuana, your information will be added to lists offered by the Department of Health. Patients can then use the website to search for doctors with medical marijuana certifications.
